          Hi Piotr,

I see some red flags with this one. I believe its a copy of a Juncker badge, the soft details on the obverse, weird finish and the soft edges of the reverse are all points that differ from original Junckers. Also notice the reverse hardware is not consistent with ANY luftwaffe badge Juncker produced.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

I saw this on the e-stand and thought it looked a bit strange.
            I think it's a good Juncker badge with a replaced hinge/pin assembly.
The clipped catch plate is not uncommon on Junckers.

            Regards,
            Frank

I also think that this is a good one with repairs.

Regarding the badge on the estand which I have posted for sale. Here is the link when my fraind who originally purchased the badge put it up for discussion.
The catch has definitely not been repaired.

All I can say is it was before Weber's book?
I am confident that the badge is a good one with typical Juncker catch on a semi-typical catchplate. I say semi-typical because I own one and have seen at least 2 more like this out of little more than a handful of Junckers encountered. However, I think that the hinge and pin are not original to the badge.
I will post my example for comparison.

                      Frank,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Regarding the hinge and pin they are made out of the same metal as the catch.
And are attached to the badge exactly the same. There is no evidence of any other pin or catch ever been fitted to the badge.

                      Many thanks, Gareth

Gareth, I do see that the solder on the catch plate and hinge do look the same on your example. The badge itself is clearly a Juncker. Why the mixed bag of hardware, I don't know. Could Juncker have run out of their hinges and needed to purchase from another manufacturer? A possibility. I would have to see the badge in hand. It is certainly not a 100% textbook Juncker according to current knowledge. If indeed the hardware is original to the badge it may be that we have more to learn here.

                          Piotr/Gareth,

I would tend to agree with Frank's comments here. The badge die characteristics match known originals. Some speculate Juncker, others S&L and even some marked with the GB for Brehmer have these same basic cutouts.

I remember seeing this badge when Richard posted it a few years ago and the concensus was good. As Frank correctly stated, these examples with the catch-plate cut in half are certainly original and have been seen before, but I lost most of my old dealer file PIC's saved years ago. I'll post a close-up of one from another collector (Chris?) that shows the same.

The thing with these badges, are the variations we see on hardware and sometimes eagles. Also, GB badges do use this style hinge, so as Frank stated, it could be a case of using this style hinge later on as supplies ran out of the barrel-type.

We know parts were shared between makers, but we haven't really locked down exactly how that worked with all mankers yet. I personally think we sometimes put too much emphasis on hardware, attachment pins, etc., but understand we base our comments on what we see over time and go from there.

Here's two of mine; note the eagles and catch plates are of different designs, yet the badge remains identical.

I have also seen cases where the obilong plate is mounted vertically, and as the close-up shows, cut in half.

Personally, I think you got a decent, original badge. It may have a-typical hardware compared to others, but the hardware looks period to me and we may not have seen everything yet anyways.

                            Good luck!
