OH! I see what you were getting at Brian! Same badge, different maker mark!!! What is the pattern of those 2 badges based on? Where did it come from, another badge or made up? Thanks Brian that was a perfect example even if it took my half retarded brain a while to get it.

In a nut shell, for me, an object like say an IMME pilot badge becomes 'real' when it's acquired through a vet, usually more than one and documented. I bought such a badge from Detlev a while back and had already decided to send it back when another member came forward and showed his grandfather's pilot badge, a perfect example to mine. So when you see some lazer conn-cocted badge like this pop up that doesn't match a known example, you KNOW it's a fake. Now if the material, hinge and catch and craftsmanship all looked period, you'd look a little harder. But this one is just a little too nicely 'cut' from the wrong material, wrong finishing but hinge, rivets and catch could all appear mostly period and that was the intent of the maker. And, it's not cast or pressed from dies, it's a cut out.

        Thanks Brian!
How do you tell about the material and how can yousee that it is laser cut?

Poor Brian, now you bear the brunt of my never ending questions, a common danger of answering my queries as Frank and Philippe found out the hard way

I feel like the man who was just granted vision, albeit 2 minutes ago, the task of describing light to the blind man

I think you need to buy a good fake like this and you'll never be fooled again. I think there are sites that sell these for what they are, fakes, not cheap but a good looking desk ornament that if it disappears after a beer-for-all, won't really matter.

The gunners, pilots and observers are ALL of this ilk. Mine came from this gentleman a few years ago, you see him at a show, I'm sure he'll have more!

            Sal,

Have some patience and start digging through the threads on this forum. If you were to look at enough original B&N L's you'd start to understand what to look for. Check out the rivets, hinge, style of wreath & eagle, etc, etc, etc.
Then when you're alone at that next gun show or flea market you'll be able to decide for yourself (another option is to bring Brian S along with you. But be warned.....he likes to dress in drag when he goes out!).

What!! Of course GH Osang made Obs' badges..... In 1992...

@ Timbo/Sal, no need to worry about Brians cross-dressing, that was last year.. He's over his mid-life crisis now. It's sheep that have to worry, now..
