    Pilot Observer Badge

    Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this forum,so it might take a few tries to get it correct.I wanted to show a pilot observer badge I have and would like your comments on it.The makers mark is A in a circle.Who is this maker? It's the only
    DMG
    V
badge I have with this maker mark and don't recall seeing it before.Wreath height is 54mm,width is 43mm.Eagle wing span is 65.8mm(aprox).Swaastika diagonal is 16.2mm(aprox).Sorry but I don't have a scale to check the weight.hopefully the photos will show up.
    Thanks,
    Ray

Raymond, let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. That is a very interesting looking piece. Can you tell if the eagle is aluminum?

This badge is a rather crude reproduction. The maker is not one of the known makers that manufactured these badges.

Hi John.Yes the eagle is aluminum. The head of the eagle is damaged so it has no detail.
Hi Yuri. What leads you to believe this is a repro besides the maker not known for these badges? What badges did this company make, and what is the name of the company?I enjoyed your article in the new Mititary Advisor.
          Thanks,
          Ray

            Hi Ray,

I'm afraid I'l have to agree with Yuri, this is indeed a very crude fake with somekind of phantasy maker mark, saw this mm before but not sure if I saved it in my pictures files.

Even if the eagle would still have a face the overall quality of eagle is realy not something you would see on original badges not even on very late war zinkers.

This fake has been wandering around for quite some time. It has been stamped with almost every possible maker's mark, including a few fantasy ones. The large cutout between the legs is a giveaway.

The eagle form is bad, the hinge is wrong and so is the catch. I have also seen this same type of reproduction stamped with a "B. & N. L." mm.

I appreciate the help. While it sucks finding out something you own is a repro,it's always better to know so you don't make the same mistake twice.
Here is the only other Pilot/Observer I own. What do you think of this unmarked one.

That looks like a genuine late war zinc Pilot/Observer Badge.

                        Ray,

By the way, we all have gone through the highly unpleasant experience of discovering fakes in our collections. And from time to time, most of us get bitten again. This comes from a zero-tolerance policy for reproductions, and a passion for collecting items that have been there.

Compare the second badge to the first. Its quality is far superior to the first badge. The eagle is highly detailed and has a much "cleaner" aesthetic appearance.

Thanks again for the education on these badges.

While I realize there is an unattributed maker of original badges that look similar to those of GWL manufacture, this does not look like one to me. Any other opinions?
