Leaving for the MAX, and spotted this threrad. I may not be back on-line till Sunday, so replies will be a while...

The eagle's talons that are pointed inward, toward each other, don't match up to my example's design. [From the War Badges section of the WAF:]

Also, the makermark (interesting 'double tap', which doesn't make it 'bad') and hinge are 'off', a bit. And I would like to see a 3/4 angle of the catch. There has been much debate here, as to what is accepted for a BSW. Not sure how your example fits in.

            Maybe others have different views.

            Regards,
            Mark

Can we have a full shot of the reverse straight on please. I think this is going to be a "dip wreath" repro.

Yes, of course. It is quiet visable in #3. Somehow I oversaw that.

Michael, Please let the owner of the 'hiscoll' web site know this is a repro (with a link to this thread) -- he's a WAF member and would be appreciative of the information.

Hi Guys I have a question about the BSW, this type has always been referred to as the dipped wreath repro, where did that come from, who indicated that this type was a fake, I have examined this type on a couple of occassion and although I no longer collect Lufft awards I can never fully make up my mind on this one, the ones I have handled are extremely well made with good BSW mark as well as shear marks around the eagle more noticeable at the sides of the swaz, although the dip in the wreath is uncommon who is to say that this has not been caused by overzelous workmanship or a correction in a possible flaw in the wreath. Like I have already said I instantly think Dip wreath repro but hand examination always leaves me uncertain. Anyone with firm evidence on these

Also telling is the MM. On this particular fake, it's elongated compared to the real mm. It's like this one every dipped wreath BSW fake I've seen, including the one on my computer desk right now. These are not BSW variants.

GENUINE BSWs DID NOT USE A DIP WREATH! Neither the zinc or tombak BSW varieties used this wreath. Pure and simple. The BSW wreath design varies considerably from the "dip wreath" used here. The whole dip wreath repro series used castings of different genuine eagles attached to the same "dip" wreath (which was probably cast from a genuine Assmann). The nastiest "dip wreath repro" combination uses an Assmann marked eagle. Any other combination of marking and this wreath is simply a fantasy.

The term "dip wreath repro" has always referred to the "dip" in the wreath above the lower wreath tie - more evident from the reverse. The term was probably coined on this forum and I probably had a hand in that, way back when. These damned things STILL fool a lot of collectors as they are well made - they are STILL 100% FAKE though.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!
