    Deumer Airgunner

    Hi Guys,

I'm considering adding this Deumer Airgunner to my collection but before doing so I would appreciate your thoughts on the badge and have 2 questions.

    1. This badge is sold as a "Feinzink" piece. I think it's quit clear that the wreath is made of feinzink but would this also be the case for the eagle.

    2. Do their exist "original" buntmetall Airgunner badges. With original I mean pieces that left the factory without lightning bolts and not the earlier buntmetall pieces that had there bolts removed.

    Thanks in advance
    KR

        Dear Philippe,

I have seen IMME and JUNCKER air gunners in tombak, also ASSMANNs with Aluminum wreaths, but never a DEUMER. The DEUMERs were always zinc (except for the eagle, which is in most cases Buntmetall).

Why does the badge you consider have that "hammered" look on the wreaths reverse?

        Cheers, Frank

          Me Either

          Hi Philippe,
I agree with Frank. I have not come across any Deumer Air Gunner / Flight Engineer completely in buntmetall either. I have an example like the one you show which has a buntmetall eagle and zinc wreath with the lacquer still applied to it. I'll post pics of that one for you here so you may compare. The back on your pictured example is a bit "beat up" - I wonder why myself!?

            Thanks guy's,

Beats me too why the back has that worn look. Since all the finish is still applied it can hardly be zinkrot I suppose.

I thought I finaly found a nice example but maybe I should wait a little longer untill I find a complete buntmetall badge. These badges are just so hard to find. I searched all the dealer sites I know of and apart from a couple of feinzink peaces, mostly in worn condition, found nothing.

So if any of you ever come across a nice one (preferably a Buntmetall Assmann) please let me know.

              Got Lucky

              Hi Philippe,
I was quite fortunate recently having picked up an "all buntmetall" Air Gunner / Flight Engineers Badge by Juncker from Mr. Shea. I will be posting it in a separate thread in this forum because I have a question to ask about the names I found on it.

                Just out of curiousity....

what kind of rivets should an Assman Flight Engineer Badge have?

I saw one at the weekend which seemed to have what looked like brass domed rivets and whilst the badge itself looked great, the rivets were a bit suspect.

Not much help without a picture I know but my pc is still dead!

                  Martin

With the zinc badges it's harder to define the shape of the rivets. Tobac ones have very distinct cone-shaped rivets, almost like, well, a nipple!

As the war progressed, the manufacture suffered and the rivets can be found like these.

Sorry but I don't have any examples to hand to illustrate this.

ps. see you down the boozer later!

                    Hi Martin,

In attachment please find some examples of classic "nipple" shaped Assmann rivets on buntmetall badges.

Can't help you with the ones found on zinkers.

                      Hi Philippe,

here is my deumer in zinc you can compare.

I have a deumer in tombak too but with blitz removed.
