Here is a 1st pattern Juncker in Aluminum. This is the only J1 Pilot badge I've seen in aluminum,
but I have seen the 1st Pattern PO badge in aluminum.

Here is the thing: what do you think about the rivets and plated catch? The 1st pattern
PO badge ( Mark Miller's) has the standard rivets and catch.

          Neil,

great pics, everthing that I wanted to see.
Its nearly the same box as I got my J1 800 in, only mine has a ring of bronze around the button.

I asked Detlev about these boxes when I phoned him,he confirmed my thoughts that these were early boxes. They really are a better quality than other boxes that I have, or have seen. Especially the gold block lettering has remained bright for its 60 years of age.

Lorenzo that is a real beut. of a badge. I canĀ“t see any problems about the rivets, in fact they are strikingly similar to the ones on my CEJ, I think someone called them "hammered up".
The catch plate is a little strange, but appears authentic. Maybe they just wanted a little more surface for the solder, just like on the zinkers.

            Aloonamin Badges

Hi ALL (and gee thanks Larry, for dragging my name into this thread!),

Skip, Great piece. And you probably paid Flea Market prices?

Larry, I feel your badge is 100%. It has always been my belief that at the time 'they' were experimenting with aluminum badges, there existed lots of trial and error. Assuming that the rest of a given aluminum badge is proper (H/M, obverse, pin, weight, etc.) I would give wide lattitude in what 'is correct' with regards to your Pilot's badges rivets & catches. They may just be period repairs (and quite obviously substantially lowering the value of your badge!!!)

That being said....the first night you wake up wondering about your Alum Pilot badge's authenticity....PLEASE send me a PM.

            Here's my AlumJunckers.

Hi Mark. (Sorry... I didn't mean to wake you up from your beauty sleep! )

I agree that the badge is 100% authhentic. My main issue was about the rivets and catch plate, specifically: are they original or repaired?

I have studied them very closely and I am convinced that they are original to the badge and not repairs. My reasoning is as follows:

              1) There is no damage to the badge anywears on the wreath or on or around the rivets that would indicate that the original rivets were damaged or removed. For example, if you look at Neils aluminum J2 above, you can clearly scratches and damage on the wreath around the rivet area. This would be particularly true for an aluminum badge which is softer than tombak. Again, on mine there is no such scratching or damage around the rivets.

              2) Note that the catch is textbook Juncker with the beveled bottom. Also notice on the picture below that there is only one set of "catch-marks" on the pin, which would indicate that this is the original catch.

              3) On the pin, notice that it is the same exact stock of high quality brass material as the catch and catchplate. Also notice that there are no signs of damage that would cause the pin to be replaced.

So, I am convinced that the hinge, pin, catch and rivets are all original to the badge and not replacements or repairs. I tend to think that this may be one of the very first aluminum badges produced by Juncker, and agree with Mark's assessment that experimentation took place when they first switched to aluminum.

                Hi Neil,

I am sure your case is one of the first case made, very high quality. my compliments.

I have one "Bordfunker" exactly the same as yours ( with the same characteristic the cover get to the right side - but is not broken or difect -) and descripted from Detlev "about one of the first cases for the airgunner badge"

                great pieces in this thread!

                  Hi Ivan,

                  nice case mate.

That is the first one I see with just "Bordfuncker" on it.

Lorenzo, I agree that the catch is original and not repaired, it looks just like it was made like that.
and Mark, that really is a very nice alu P/O badge, amazing condition.
