Usually very difficult to tell because anyone can take black paint and "make" one of these. However, if the provenance is good, there seems nothing wrong with it. I used to believe that the paint must be matte-finished to be real, but I purchased a vet grouping last year, which contained two of these, and the paint on each was different - one was a bronze and one was a silver, both of different makers, and one was long range, and one was short range. So, differences in paint sheen do, I guess, exist! Also a personal note . . . these are rare to find, and because I knew these were real having bought them from the living veteran, I kept both.

        Hello,
thank you, Im very lucky to hear that is it an original. The paint is matte-finished, no modern paint. I bought it yust today at a little market. Not cheap, but also not expensive.

Congratulations. Again, matte-finish is not a requirement.

For an early piece like this, matte is to be expected. Later war clasps used a glossy black which flaked off very easily since it was painted directly to the zinc surface rather than on top of bronze, silver or gold paint.
