      This became interesting

With Eric's air gunner thrown in the mix, I don't find the hinge outside the realm of possibility. Seeing it at an angle, it does look like an original design. Probably more work involved with this style than the barrel tube on a plate and that's why there are so few around.

Here is my radio op from the SOS this year.

          Alan,
          Very nice badge!

          Eric,
Nice badge also! Thanks for the hinge images. I would tend to agree with Alan, that not many of this style 'block' hinge were made. At least we don't see many. Can we assume that this style hinge was used somewhere between the barrels and the 'plates'?

          Regards,
          Mark

I have another early Radio Opp Deumer with a different style hinge. It actually looks like the one in post #26 but without the base plate, I'll post photos later, if this ones no good I'll eat it .

I as well agree, nice badges and thank you for your input!

            Thank
            Tony

Hi Mark, I would agree that this block style hinge was in short term use with the first run of zinc badges. Maybe it turned out too time-consuming to make these or they had trouble making them stick???

Then they just went the route of everyone else, barrel tube on a plate, that is the most common.

Thanks guys. You're very welcome Mark, twas no problem! I haven't seen many zinc Deumers with this style of block hinge either. Back when I bought the badge I had literally took a chance, not having seen such a hinge before on a Deumer, but the rest of the badge was spot on. Over time I have come across a few others having this same style "3rd Type" hinge, but again, not many. The characteristics of said badges are unmistakeable, pure zinc Deumer except for this style hinge. Timeline? Your guesses are as good as mine, but I would tend to go along with Alan - first run of badges seems plausable. Adjustments were made after problems, cost, etc. on their subsequent runs and went toward a proven method of other manufacturers - plate under the hinge for better adhesion to the zinc. I wish I knew the answer!
