Did you receive them in this condition or have you cleaned them up a bit ?

They're just the way I received them. I remember cleaning out the maker mark on an Assman badge not too long ago. There was some millscale or something down in the stamping. Without really thinking about what I was doing I picked up a sewing needle and started probing to get this bit of scale out. It came out after a couple of tries but there was left in it's place a shiny set of scratches where the steel pin scraped the nickel silver metal of the eagle. After this I am very reluctant in doing anything to my pieces.
