    Juncker Pilot Badge Opinions Please

A medal collector who reportedly stopped collecting in the 1970s recently decided to liquidate his collection. I now have the opportunity to buy this Juncker marked pilot's badge. I have never owned an original Juncker badge, therefore, I am turning to you Luftwaffe badge experts. Is this badge original? All opinions and comments are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I was relatively confident that this badge was original and want to thank everyone so far for confirming it. Question: Can anyone tell me briefly what exactly a J3 version is or refer me to a link? Thanks. Barry

                      Hi Barry,

Photograph and study that Juncker stamp, imprint it into your brain. See the 'L' in Berlin, the other letters like the 'S' and 'W'. This stamp was used on quite a few of Junckers badges, as you probably already know. And you'll see immitations of it on reproductions and copies also, but they haven't really perfected it yet. Learning this stamp really helped me as I ventured into the Luftwaffe flight badge area of collecting.

                      That's a perfect stamping.

                      Robert

Thanks very much Rob! Okay, I reviewed the maker marks and see what you mean now. I've had several people PM me telling me that this is a great badge. Apparently, it's a textbook J3 in perfect condition.

                          It's perfect Barry,

Look above the hinge and you'll see little hacksaw marks where the jeweler cut out the piece to be used in the hinge. The rivets, the wreath, the catch, everything is perfectly textbook in every way. What a way to start a Luft. collection!

                            Robert,

Thanks for pointing out the saw marks near the hinge - I had not noticed that before. I thought I would post a closer image of the marks for all to see.

                              Very nice photo Barry,

As you get further into the Luft. flight badges you will become familiar with all of the maker's individual ways they made their badges. There is a lot to learn on this. But the best way I found to learn was to buy the badges, do a lot of photographing and studying of the individual badges by various makers. Even then there are things you miss because you're not specifically looking for any one thing. Every maker had his own specific way of making the hinge, the catch, the pin, everything. And all of these special 'signatures' spell out a genuine original. Two of my favorites are the Juncker and Deumer. After you get further into it you'll understand why.

                              Robert
