    "Late War" Badges

Hello everyone. I have been doing some extensive reading about late war vs. early war medals and, forgive me if this seems like a dumb question, but what does it mean when they say the eagle has been "sweated" onto the badge? does that mean it's not riveted on, but soldered? or some other form of application? This description has always eluded me. Thanks for the help

    Hi Mike,

Someone with a fitting background may be able to give a more detailed response but "sweated" does indeed mean NO rivets. It's also NOT soldered - as in hot soldered. Another term for sweated is "cold soldered" - as I understand it, it is the chemical reaction between two substances that form a firm bond with a solder-like "residue". A good example of sweating can be found on many LW Flak badges where the eagles were commonly sweated on.

    Regards
    Mike

Thanks for the advice. I have a late war issue Juncker Glider Pilot's badge, and it looks to have the Eagle "sweated" onto the wreath. I have read in several books that later issues of these badges were manufactures in this fashion. I was hoping that my assumptions were correct, as I attempt to verify authenticity. This badge is an inherited piece and I have a record of what was paid for it.
The badge was acquired in trade for 2 EK1s, 1 EK2, a cased EK 1939 spange, A Dutch SS Breast Badge and a set of SS Obersturmbannfuhrer's collar tabs. At the time it was a fair trade.....but not so much now I wouldn't think. As I didn't do the trade, I couldn't possibly explain how so many wonderful pieces were given up for the glider pilot.....makes me cry sometimes All I will say is that it better be genuine!
