LW Erinnerungsabzeichen

Isn't it true that this award was for WWI flyers? I have a Soldbuch to a man born in 1923 and he was awarded the LW Erinnerungsabzeichen in Silber in 1942. He served in the post-war Luftwaffe and his ribbon bar has the medal on it. Any explainations?

It is for retired flyers. Personnel who were WW1 pilots still wore their WW1 pilot badge with their WW2-era uniform. If a pilot was retired from flying status, he would have been awarded the Erinnerungsabzeichen.

"In Silber" ? It only came in silver, didn't it?

Here's the medal bar and post-war extract from his Soldbuch. I assumed the "in sliber" was an admin mistake but he was in the hospital for only 9 days once and no indication he was an invalid because he served until the end of the war earning the Erdkampfabz. after the Erinnerungsabz.????
