Yes, absolutely necessary to get a pure, frontal scan of a RO/AG badge. I usually edit the pen out afterwards! But only when I have enough time in between dyeing OM pilot badge photos to make them appear to be P/Os!
Gold & Silver Magic Markers always worked well for me!
