        That's what it's all about

        Robert,

I've been here almost since the start and I'm still learning something new everyday.

        Frank:

I really can't see this feature on your badge, maybe because the angle, but I noticed that Mark's badge (beautiful BTW-again! ) and Robert's badge both have the same deformed swastika with the left and top arms bent ever so slightly. Is this common to these early Assmann Paras?

          question for Frank

          Hi to all.

Frank, why do you said types without cout out the space in the wings are more early then the others?
          have you knowledge about it?

here is address of mine for better comparision. As we can see, mine and yours and Marks look come from same die and time but mine as cut out .

          http://www.majorplm.com/collections/...mann-Ivan.html

.......and follow is a post card ( for sale in majorplm) that shows space inside the wings.

            Dear Ivan,

Your badge is very nice indeed, but I would guess somewhat later than Mark´s and mine without the cutout. Note that your wreath already has the darker finish.
How did I develop this theory? Simply by looking at a lot of examples of Assman paras. All the zink one I have seen (or own) are cutout. Very early ones, with a silver coloured wreath, are non cut out.

            Cheers, Frank

                Dear Ivan,

Can´t speak for Mark´s badge for sure, but the "dark" you see on my badge´s wreath is patina, not finish.

I was under the impression that mine has a darkened wreath, with rubbed highlights. I suppose it could be patina....it seems pretty consistant throughout. From the reverse it looks like patina-or grime-hard to say.

....only my personal opinion Frank and Mark but for me your badges have black paint as mine ( in mine there are more trace) and is not a dirty patina.

                        Mark,

You have to quit showing that beautiful para badge of yours as my eyes are starting to water over it.

Maybe I need to sneak up to Alaska and...

                            Tim,
I do not know whether the bent swastika is common among the Assmann para's. I too have seen others this way. Always thought that perhaps it was bent from ejection out of the dies. I don't know.
I have always heard that the very early Assmann para's were adorned with a frosted and burnished wreath. And later on, the wreaths were chemically oxidized ( as is my badge ). Some para's have had their darkening polished away by their owners or even a collector, leaving the nickel silver exposed.
As it stands, we have evidence that the early first pattern Assmann para's had their wings uncut-out and the second pattern cut-out. This seems conclusive, does it not? I thank you all for this education. Now the search begins all over again for an early first pattern. I thought I had one, now I know better. Mark, thank you for the photo of your badge. It is a great example. Great thread. Robert

An Assmann zinc para badge for Frank

                              Hello Frank,

Here is my contribution to this interesting thread: Assmann mid war zinc para badge with the area between left wing and tail feathers NOT cut out.

                              Happy collecting!

                                Hi Philippe,

what do you think Frank's theory about uncut-out => early ones?

I am not persuaded about it!

badge you showed here can be an early one ???

......and Mark? what do you think?
