Juncker Observer - Observations

Please take a look at this Observer and let me know what you think. The bird does not have the detail (cut-outs) that I have on another Juncker (J2) and I am wondering if it may be a later version or what. I have never seen a MM so clear and at first I had doubts. What do you think? It does come from a extremely good source but that means little I suppose. It is a worn badge. Your thoughts are appreciated, Richard

I think you're in for a rough ride with that maker's mark.

You may be right - also the placement of the eagle may be high - opinions welcome. Several things strike me as "not as expected". Now that I have biased everyone towards the negative, I welcome critiques and opinions on the badge as portrayed. Could very well be a hard sell on this one.

Hi rfleming32,

That maker mark is definately bogus. Also, I don't like the hardware setup for a tombak badge on what looks like to be a zink wreath. The barrel hinge tubing looks really thick as well. The only good aspect I like are the rivets.

Hi Tom, that is his real name- Richard Fleming. Back to the badge, I do not like it, for the reasons mentioned above. With a good makermark this badge could cause some trouble. best wishes,

I agree,it's no juncker..,a older fake IMO,at least 15 years old,these also come with the CEJ mark...

I guess we are pretty much done with this evaluation. Most people immediately picked up on the maker mark. Juncker cut out areas of the birds left wing that we do not see here. The left wing looks generally different than a Juncker to me. The reverse of the wreath has not been finished around the edges. The obverse of the wreath looks to be very well done in my opinion. It weighs in at 39.1 grams while the original below is 45.7. The eagle is thinner which may explain the difference. I think it was fashioned off a Juncker wreath and another makers eagle. Mr. Le Conte would be on the mark with regard to this being an older copy. In answer to the good source question, it comes from an old collection where I have purchased several good early badges. In fact, the comparison piece shown below was from the same person. The good one is on the right of course. Without the MM, I think this could fool someone. It fooled a pretty sharp collector many years ago. Thanks for taking a look and sharing your thoughts.
