Mike, good question but remember that there are fakes that are not cast from originals!

@ Skip, yes that's what I'm referring to.

There's at least three of us, as I have issues as well. The photo of the wing did it for me. Very convincing, but not one I could be comfortable with. Since it appears that this is the first one most everyone has seen, it doesn't make sense to me that they would tool up to make what would have had to be an incredibly small run.

Thanks for your comments on my glider badge and thanks to Richard for posting it while I joined the forum. Have just paid my $25 and so hopefully will post the requested pics over the weekend.

I was expecting out and out condemnation of the badge so on the one hand am pleased it may be original and also glad it has got you all talking.

I bought the badge about a year ago for approx £600 and it was reputed to come from and old luftwaffe collection (I know appraise the badge not the story). I then discovered this forum and the general view that Assmann did not make this badge and also some negative comments on the dealer.

I can see no sign of cast marks or anything on the badge or eagle. The red only appears under flash conditions-I know from my svhool chemistry and you can get red oxides of copper

I have a few questions I wondered if people can answer.

          1. If the badge is a fake does this mean the fakers are now copying the Assmann 'cup-cake' rivet? If so isn't this worrying?
          2. It would be nice to see the makers mark on the back of the US badge mentioned in one of the threads. Was this a pre-war badge?
          3. If so and the rivets above are typical of early Assmann badges is it possible Assmann were an early maker but stopped? I think I saw a thread somewhere with different types of Assmann makers mark from early to late war.

hopefully post other pics soon-Guess I have a research project-anyone seen early Assmann catalogues?

          Cheers
          Mike

              Hi Mike,

              and welcome to the Forum
You******180;ll meet some great guys here and its always nice having a banter about badges is******180;nt it.

And what a great start you******180;ve made. A very interesting badge indeed and one that seems to have most of the collecting community here baffled.

In answer to your question, yes, I would be very worried if the fakers had started copying the Assmann cupcake rivets. The whole standard of the badge would be very worrying, if I thought it was a modern copy. But I don******180;t.

I think much more that, if its a copy, its a very old one. Possibly dating back to shortly after the war. Who knows

It could also be an early original thats never turned up on this Forum before. We were very sceptical of the Imme Pilot Badges with Immes own ugly eagle. I believe they are now generally accepted as being authentic, just like the JFS Para and RK AG/RO that Mike mentioned early.
I also like Toms point about the angled cuts. An interesting observation and something I had never thought about before.

I******180;m looking forward to some good shots from the side of the hinge and some large ones of the rivets. I would love to hold in in my hand to get a feel for it.

Can I ask you which dealer you bought it from?

You can PM me if you like.

                Hello all.

                Welcome to the forum Mike!!!

I have been following this thread with interest the last couple of days.

Here are examples of an Assmann Glider Qualification Badge, and an Assmann Para Qualification Badge, made by the firm during the postwar occuaption period and offered for legitimate sales to U.S. servicemen. I seem to recall Combat Infantry Badges bearing similar postwar Assmann maker marks.

Assmann (as you all know) did use the small raised A maker mark on their double marked Luftwaffe flak badges......the small A being on the eagle's left wing when viewed from reverse.

A photo credit is owed a fellow WAF member for this image. While I have a badge of this type, I can't get in there for an equally good closeup. Naturally, I will remove this image if requested to do so.

Welcome Mike, If you go to the testing and advise forum, which is right before the membership forums, click on Mark's excellent thread at the top on how to post images. It will explain exactly how to do it.
                          best wishes,

                            Hmm,very unlikely IMO.
Gliders are wanted badges, this is the first Assmann I see.
If it was a old fake we'd probaly seen quite some others.
If fake,it's a good fake,recent..and many "dealers" will have one of those.
                            Problem is,we've nothing to compare..
I think time will solve the problem, look at all (recent) fakes...,first you see one and then there're 10,20....
Finding just one good fake and no more than that is almost impossible with all those eyes we've in the battle.

                            Concerning lack of detail..
We can only say when we've seen several of the same badges IMO.
I've seen a original Juncker PO which lacked a lot of breast feathers compared to his brother/sister..
                            Something in the process.

                            Jos.

                              Assmann Hinge assembly

Sorry for the delay in posting these images. They were too large and so I have had to edit them. Also problems in uploading as I followed the instructions on Mark schroeders thread but I never got the 'add this file' pop-up and so have had to upload each image and then use the insert image link above.

First image is the hinge assembly
