    whats that below pilot badge?

picture of my grandfather, whats that below his pilot badge? looks like a shiny X or a + shaped something or other, what does military etiquette say you can pin there? I don't know much about my grandfathers military service other than he was in the legion condor , later north africa...he was basically everywhere and did everything a pilot could possibly do. this pic is 1942, any ideas? thank you.

Well, first of all, I don't see the pilot badge you're referring to; a pilot badge would have been worn lower down on his tunic, unseen on the the photo provided. The medals that are in view are (left) Luftwaffe 4-year service medal, and (right) possibly the 1 Oct 38 medal (?). To the left of the 4-year service medal is what looks to be a flower boutonniere, the type worn for wedding photos - is his bride sitting next to him in the photo?

I agree. 4yr-long service and Sudetenland medal.
