Thanks Darrell, I had hoped you would reply. I believe you are somewhat of an authority on U-boat badges, is that correct? Would this be typical of a late war badge by this maker?

Yes. I took a look at Gordon Williamson's Site here:

I'd say HE is one of the leading experts on Kriegsmarine Badges

It shows a R.S. Badge with identical Characteristics like yours. Although yours has seen a bit more of the elements than his example. But they are the same

P.S. I have a GWL made Zinc U-Boat Badge that has alot of the Gilt still present. I love our kind that have that "been there done it" appearance

Now for even better news on mine. I bought it at the local military store. It came in with a box full of fake medals, and was therefore labeled as a fake. I took a chance since it seemed of good quality, and I paid $25 for it.

What would you estimate the value to be?

I would say that the reason it was marked as a "fake" was ... at one time (not too long ago) ... the round letters of R.S. like yours was not accepted as authentic. The more recognised had a angular shape to the letters. In recent times, the Rounded R.S. has been accepted as original. Maybe thats why

Yes, I was aware of the rounded vs. angled letters controversy. Also I guess Souval made pieces after the war, so that has some people concerned on these as well.
