It looks like both of the U-Boats might be the "French-made" souvenir type. (often colloquially and incorrectly referred to as "Bacquevilles"). Closeups would help.

                Hi Raph,

Thanks for the confirmation it's the same type, but the attribution to Bacqueville is a huge leap of faith, especially since the firm of Bacqueville has denied any part in their production and the hardware is not seen on any known Bacqueville product.

                Best regards,
                ---Norm

A kind of urban legend !!
This summer 12 different exemplars of Bacqueville models were found on a Fleas market near Paris with their typical box and silk paper still around.
                  They were mint unisued.
They were found in an old house far away from Paris.
                  So who's the maker ?
                  Regards.

Well, we might have to go through a 1970 telephone book...

(A joke, not a proven statement of fact.)

It is interesting that these were found in France though. In any case, do you know what the purpose of the box was Ralph?

                        No help for Ralph, yet!!!

Wood boxes for personal effects for sailors on board of ships & U-BOOTS.
In case of death, the contents of the box will be given to the familly.
Most of the time, you have an aluminim plate on the box with name and matricule of the sailor.
In this particular case, the name is engraved directly on wood.
The hook with hole is for a locker.
                          Regards.

This is what is commonly thought, but no, it is not for personal effects. Sailors who died had their belongings shipped back to their families of course. However, this box had nothing to do with that.

It is actually a shoe shine box.

                            Mine attached.
