Zeke, I think you are on the right track there. I am drawing a blank but if memory serves, it was awarded to coxswains in the Wehrmacht. Exactly as you said. I just can't remember the title of these troops who earned this or the title of the badge.
      Sorry I couldn't help more.

      Regards,
      JustinG

          "inland assault boat badge"????

Where do people come up with these things???

It is a simple 'Trade/Rate Badge for a Helmsman or coxen'

Not sure if this is original or not.

            Steuermann

Funnily enough, there's a good thread on these Steuermann insignia running currently in the Uniforms and Insignia forum.

Opps I lie It is not the Kriegsmarine badge I was thinking of.

It is the herr Steurmann Anchor/Wheel badge I still say it is not original though looks very close to the ones they sell at

In fact, "inland assault boat badge" is a pretty good description!
                See this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ght=Steuermann
As Steve says in that thread: "It is not a kriegesmarine patch, it is a Pionier Steuermann badge for qualified pilot of a pionier sturmboot." That's why it's in silver and not gold thread or bullion.
                Also this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ght=Steuermann
Technically in the wrong forum but still sort of nautical!

                Best regards,
                ---Norm

Just bumbled across this on another form. One of the very few perio photos of this badge in wear.

The point I was trying to make was that when you literary translate some German terms that can find quite odd in English.

Late response, but the badge you posted is original.

I have a few with the same maker-mark.
