          Hello Mowgli

First let me say that I'm not an expert, but it would be illogical if this should be a cap badge as to the large pin...that would result in lots of "Autsch's" If authentic to wich I haven't got a clue about (though I do like it - not an obvious fake), I belive it would be for the civil dress. The cap badge for 1st Ubootflotilla is the large U with an Uboot going through it as seen on the drawing. These however are highly faked and can be seen on regular basis at eBan.

Not much help I'm affraid - just my 2 cents.

          Cheers,
          Carsten

Not a cap badge, but it could be a postwar veteran´s pin.
Under all circumstances I wouldn´t call it crap, but it looks postwar.

              thanks

this is exactly what I neded to hear.
I aslo thought it might be postwar. it simply looks too good to be wartime although I've seen wartime badges in perfect shape.
              Anyway thanks again

                Hi Mowgli,

The coat of arms of Essen, patron city of U-203, was painted on the front of the conning tower, but the crown was painted red, not yellow or gold as your pin shows.

Your pin is a postwar made pin, no crap or fake, just an original pin people / tourists could buy: also little shields one can place on a walking stick, same as the teaspoons with a city emblem one could and can buy, till the late seventies souvenirs like that were very popular, today they are bought by the elderly people.

I don't think the box belongs with your pin.

                yours friendly
