    R.s. Gab

    Hi Guys,

Recently picked up this RS General Assault Badge on the estand very cheaply. Its a late war badge and in quite poor condition.
Having done a search on these I have found that there has been some controversy over this type of badge in particular due to excess material that appears around the grenade and bayonet. Well check this out!!!

    ??

It appears that the obverse die has been completely misaligned to the reverse with the result that not only is there a lot of flashing but also that part of the grenade and eagles head have been chopped when the voids were punched out.
You can follow the misalignment round anti clockwise.
I am 100% sure that this badge is genuine but obviously quality control left a little to be desired in the late war years!

This reminds me of the unmarked GABs you find with the completely malformed head.

Yes, the two dies (obverse and reverse) just got shifted a bit. No other problems.

Sometimes, you can also see this happaning on Assmann semi hollow GABs, leaving the Assmann eagle with different neck strenghts as a result (and more problems with the grenade/bajonet area)
        Cheers, Frank

Thanks Frank and Eric, nice badge! Yours has the angular makers mark which many collectors regard as a much safer bet than the round letters. (Although there is no real basis for this!)

That "old collector myth" can completely be discarded, since several Souval badges with the big round letter RS logo have proven to be originals (e.g. PAB, CAB, U-Boat). And there is absolutely no reason to assume the badge you own is in any way less original than Eric´s type.
                Cheers, Frank

I, myself, own a U-boat badge with the "rounded" RS letters as well as an Auxiliary Cruiser badge with the "angular" letters. As a matter of personal interest, how do we explain that the same manufacturer used such different logo? different period .

Not necessarily different period. It is by far not unusual for a big number of other manufacturers to use more than one logo on their badges. Actually the ones that only use one logo are in the vast minority! Why we get the creeps when Souval uses more than one mark is beyond me. In my opinion Souval´s post war production can easily be sorted out with some common sense. Let´s start to collect in a more modern way and regard this maker like any other maker of which originals and fakes exist. It is about time!
                    Cheers, Frank
