GAB material question

Hi guys,



I picked this one up, maybe some of you remember this badge. Unfortunately the seller was smart and requested a little more than the 1,80 RM written on the back. But now I´m a bit puzzled with the material. It is a very smooth metal, no sign of bubbling or the kind of "roughness" you´d expect on a zinc piece. The weight is about 29g. So what do you think, a zincer or maybe some sort of other metal?

I agree. First: this is a very nice looking GAB and second: Some of the zinc based alloys were of a higher quality than others.

The soldering of the hinge looks a bit rough, do you think it may have been repaired?

Hi Daniel,

I agree with the others, this is made from fine zink and is very nice indeed. Graeme has a good point on the hinge, looks like scorch marks on the obverse head area as well from a possible repair.

when I look closer at this piece I think you may be right. I got the same feeling, so I did a little fishing around and found at least pieces that made me think it could not be resoldered.

I see the different coloring on the eagles head, surely a sign that there was some heat, but this also occurs on the wings:

If this is now ironclad that it is resoldered, I´ll have to talk with the seller.
