    Eismeer medaille

    Hello Phillipe,

Thanks for sharing this interesting piece with us , i have been looking and digging into my old books a little to see if I could find anything usefull and i have found the following : this is a relatively unknown medal ( not official ) and is probably from a Gebirgsjäger unit , the medal is made from blackned iron and is about 31 mm width.

The above mentioned info is from Dr. K.G.Klietmann , he pictures a exact match for your piece but it seems that attachement method is a little different => anyway a very interesting piece IMHO

      Hi Stijn,

The example shown in Kleitmann or, to be more precise, on the dustjacket is in fact broken. The tab is broken off the medallion. The example shown by Phillipe is intact and the leather is probably a bootlace used by the soldier to attach the medallion to his ID disk chain. Or to a buttonhole so that he could carry it in his pocket as a lucky charm without losing it. It's actually made of patinated bronze or tombak. Did Kleitmann say they were made of iron? Just goes to show that you can't rely 100% upon reference books.

I'm still researching that Glider Pilot Badge. But I will probably start a new thread about it. I know of one other like it. Perhaps two. And they have been around for some years. If these are, as you believe, fakes, then we should make people aware of it. If the fakers were achieving this quality a few years ago, then I think LW badge-collecting is in bad trouble! The thing is, quite a few people do not believe that they are fakes.

Anyway, a discussion about Glider Pilot Badges should make a good, informative and interesting thread.

      Regards,

      Prosper

        Eismeer medaille

        Hello,

THanks Prosper for the comments, i have looked it up again and it the metal used is so called " Kriegsmetal " , i must have been misreading as i assumed it did mention " Iron " , sorry for the mix-up

ps : i agree with should discuss the glider pilots badge further , etc .. but keep in mind that we can proove very little regarding this matter so in many cases we can have a educated guess , im however willing to help wherever possible

          INfo : Eismeer medaille

          Hello,

I received today the newest BDOS magazine ( nr. 21 ) in the mail box ( boy im going to have to read quite a lot interesting new facts ) and there is also a question posted about the " Eismeer " medaille on page nr. 49

There is such a piece shown ( front and reverse ) and the attachement method is quite interesting => the pictured medal also shows the same round whole's, etc .. but it is attached towards the so called " NordfrontKreuz 1941 - 43 " , => can anyone of our German members who are also a member off the BDOS + have good PC skills scan the image , etc ... ????? ( + offcoarse reffer towards the BDOS magazine, + give proper credit , etc ... ) so whe can vieuw and discuss it here also

          Cordial Greetings,
