            Hi Darrell,
I like them, there is nothing wrong that I can see. Nice collection of Ostvolk awards.

What is the difference between a wartime and a 57th version of this award? Someone said to me, the ring is shorter on 57th version. Is that true? If so, one of Darrels medals is a 57 award.

              best,
              Gerd

Hi Gerd ... I was wondering about that. The ring seems to be attached to the top of the one sunburst, (if thats what you call it) rather than an extension above.

I would assume that both 1st Classes are Gold based on the color of the pins assemblies on the reverse?

                      Hi Darrel,

thats what i meant. It is only a rumor with the ring(or sunburst), so i am not sure, if that is true at all. I would love to know more about this and look forward to input of other members. Don´t we have some 57th cracks here on the forum? Antti? Henri?

                      best,
                      Gerd

Very difficoult to say, Darrel. But i tend to agree with you, that these appear to be gold versions.

                          hello all,

Gerd is right in my opinion , I've never seen one 1957 ostvolk medal with the same ring that the war version so I think that medal # 4 could be 1957 version or maybe a maker variant?

Yes .. could be a variant. I hope someone can tell 100% for sure.

Humberto, the others look ok to you. Would you say top two are Gold 1st Classes?

                              Hi Darrell,

In my opinion both the 1st class gold badges are pre-WW2 . Most originals that I’ve seen are made of zinc and have the concave shape on the reverse while the repros that I’ve seen have a solid surface. I also like the style of hinge, catch and pin on both your badges. IMO the 2nd class silver badge (item no. 3) is also pre-WW2, not sure about the last one, but keep in mind that these “Ostvolk” badges were manufacturer by various German firms so there might be some slight variation on the ring size.
I can’t remember if the “1957” issues had the flat surface on the reverse and also if they were made a tad smaller in size. Sorry that’s all I know perhaps other members can provide some more details on these Ostvolk awards.

                              Cheers
                              Rene Chavez
