    Spanish Civil War Medal

This could go here or in International; although not a Wehrmacht award per say, the medals of the Spanish Civil war are applicable, and specially this one awarded en mass to all Legion Condor members.

Since I'm talking pictures of my collection for the "frankcatalog", I'll share this here. I know only the basics so if one of our Spanish friends wants to expand more on it, feel free. I don't know if this is period, I doubt it, most likely a replacement made later on. Still, it was cheap and interesting ($20 in '99), so I picked up.

You have a beautifull example of the Spanish Campaign Medal for the Spanish Civil War in his combat form, black stripes in the ribbon, the rear medal has green stripes. This medal was officially created on January 27th, 1.937 in the Decreto 192 that reflects the decorations that could be awarded to the Nacionalist troops, it was created, but without a design and on October 1.937 a competition was open for such design, the winner was Hauptmann Aurelio Perote Martínez and in May 1.938 started the production by Industrias Egaña.

If something more needed let me know.

Angel, were these produced later for veterans? If so, how can you tell a "period" one from a replacement one?

              Thanks for the info,

It was made in so quantity during the 4o's and 50's that no serious atempt has been made to fake it, remember that almost half of the population receive it for frontline or rear service so no need of a restrike in the 60's. Current copies are black and two pieces made as several Spanish made Ostmedaille and black with a gold border and easy spot as low valour copies. I can say you that I know Spanish dealers that has boxes full of this medal with its paper and box mint untouched since the 40's.

                  Talk about overproduction....

Well, it's good to know that it's an original at least.

Anyone have any idea what these cased examples are worth? Have an opportunity to grab one but what's an acceptable range?

Top $40 if it's in your hand at a show, more is inmoral, here we have it from a range €25-35 boxed and in paper wrap, usually cartoon box is damaged, but nothing beyond repair or detract the medal.

                        Hi all,

These medals have been funding my collection in the last few months. To buy them here in Madrid its 10€ for the boxed item in its wrapper. I then sell them via ebay witha £4.99 start and leave the market to determine the value. Tends to be £20 a go at the moment. of course any profit soon goes to Herr Niemann or the Estand members!!

So what its worth? Probably £20/$30

                        regards,

                        Angus

This thread needs a bump up...

Value of these medals seems a bit out of sorts.
