I have Long Service Medals in my collection with that type of fastener.

Those are easy to make. Take a pin-back sewn ribbon off a Faithful Service Cross , attach a Wehrmacht long service eagle, put on the long service medal or cross and ureka, an original Wehrmacht long service award with pin-back wide ribbon - all original parts, but not wartime assembled.

OK guys, now start posting all those wartime photos showing pinback long service awards in wear...

I think that's a long shot i dont belive in. So many of these service awards are assembled to fool us collectors. My other two picture proof that be wrong but then again there are believers and non believers.

Like Gaston stated maybe awarded on other occasion. Maybe such a picture of long service award will pop-up. I'm waiting for it

I can answer to this question: the only maker who made this kind of ribbon is for the Straight G 7. All the rest of the memels were never found with this, but single mounted in the way of a medal bar.

The Memels didn't have a case, only a packet as Wayne and others said, even if some were found in red/wine cases; but this is not a solid proof.

BTW, I do no like the way the pin was sewn on your example. It is crooked and too low. Again, JMO.

Maybe these pin back versions were a lot like US medals. They were also pin back during the war and pinned on when awarded. They were never worn that way after that, though. In fact, they are normally never worn, just the ribbon bars.

No, but that is an Italian award, not German, so the comparison isn't apples to apples. I have several just like yours.

Interesting to see that the one one the frist picture (right side) is placed also low like mine.

The different styles depends on the creativity of the collector or dealer that made them.

Good for you. I have two Memel medals, both on medal bars, and that is as far as I will go. If I found one in mint condition in the packet, I would probably try to add that. But a sewn pin back ribbon version - not for me. If I really wanted one, I would just make it from parts like all the ones I have seen.
