Ostmedal & EK : Ribbon above the pocket or sewn on the 2nd button

    Hello

I sometimes see on jackets the Ostmedal on the second button as a sewn short lenght ribbon and in other case in a pin ribbon just above the chest pocket

(Same question for the Ek 2)

    - How the rules of wear applies for those awards in frontline duty ?

    Thanks

    Hello,

the medal itself for these two awards were never worn in the field. In their place the soldier could either wear a ribbon through the button hole or the award on a ribbon bar worn about the left breast pocket. You might occassionally see photos of these medals being worn on the field uniform but this was only the case on the day of the award and not worn in combat.

      Ok, for the medal itself

But what the rules ask for concerning the ribbon lenght or the ribbon pin ?

Is it considered as being for the same occasions ?

        Kind regards

I found this list on which german ribbons that was allowed to be worn in the button-hole.

Military awards in order of precedence:

          1. Iron Cross 2nd class 1939 ribbon with the Honour Roll Clasp.

          2. The Iron Cross 2nd class 1914 on combatants ribbon with Repetition Clasp 1939

          3. The Iron Cross 2nd class 1914 on home fronts ribbon with Repetition Clasp 1939

          4. Iron Cross 2nd class 1939

          5. The Iron Cross 2nd class 1914 on combatants ribbon

          6. The Iron Cross 2nd class 1914 on home front ribbon

          7. War Merit Cross 2nd class with swords

          8. Medal for the Winter Battle in the East 1941-42

          9. Baltic Cross

Heer awards for the eastern people in order of precedence:

          10. Bravery Award for the Eastern People 2nd class in gold, in silver or in bronze

          11. Merit Award for the Eastern People 2nd class in gold, in silver or in bronze

Civilian/military awards in order of precedence:

War Merit Cross 2nd class without swords

          War Merit Medal

          Medal for Lifesaving

Is this list correct? Apart from number 3, that doesn't exist. But is anything missing?

And what foreign ribbons were the german soldier allowed to wear on the tunic? I assume there was strict regulations on them to...

            Hi Von Peter,

Thanks for posting that list. I've not yet seen any sort of official list, though truth be told, I've not sought one and it obviously exists. The interesting thing would be to compare this to what we've seen. There were constant amendments to regulations over time, and regulations weren't always followed. I'd love to see a photo thread on here of various ribbons that we have seen either sewn into the button hole or otherwise. I'm sure if I do a quick side-search, a thread already exists to that end.

I've seen some ribbons sewn into the right pocket flap (blood order) and other common awards (like the Iron Cross) sewn into the tip of the lapel on fliegerblusen and such.

Soldiers would get a medal with a very long ribbon. They would wear the ribbon tucked into their buttonhole for the first day. The first day of when they got awarded the medal.

The rest of the time they could cut the ribbon, [optionally] and sew it into his secord or first or middle of front buttonhole.

              Hope this helps.
