    Medal Bar

    Servus,

Can anyone tell me what medals are on this bar? I recognize few, but many look foreign (not German). Perhaps A-H?

    Sorry, I can't post fotos!

      Thank you Gary,

However, I believe that there are German awards as well.

      I think I see
      1) Prussian IC II
      2) Friedrich August Cross II or Austrian Karl-Truppenkreuz
      3) Hindenburg Cross
      4) Austrian Service Medal

      Can't make out others

Thank you for posting the images. I do have the privilege to post photos, yet.

Incredible job identifying the decorations. It is rather odd that the officer does not have a SINGLE WWII medal. I contacted the seller and he said that there is a date 1944 on the reverse. However, that seems incorrect, I would suggest 1938-1939... If this Oberstleutnant served in the military during WWII he would have at least a flower war ribbon or KvK...

I discovered that there are two more photos of this soldier in the sellers offerings.

Also, if you look at the studio stamp, it is in Czech only, which is unusual because during the Protectorate times the writing would be either in German or German and Czech as Brno is the second largest city in Czechoslovakia and had a large German community until 1945.

Is the tunic early or late war? He has spurs on his boots, so perhaps cavalry?

              Hi!

A "1944" on the backside doesn't necessarily mean, that the photo was taken in 1944. I think these are earlier pics.
Many of these old officers had a job "behind a desk" and often only got a "KVK II. class with swords" in WW2. In this case many of them didn't let produce a new medalbar.

              Kind regards, Peter

Was not that a requirement during WWII in German army? If you did received a decoration, you had to either adjust your medal bar or wear these attached separately?

Also no clasp to EKI! Still think 1938-1939. He could have made General during WWII. He is lieutenant colonel already.

First: a KVK-ribbon could also be worn in the second buttonhole. And then: Who would cause a problem for an Oberstleutnant because of he doesn't wear a decoration???
Believe me, many of these old Austrian officers often didn't get decorations and only were promoted once in the whole wartime of WWII. Some were retired during the war. Some were concerned "political unreliable" because of beeing "monarchists"...
Maybe "Your" man became a General - maybe he was still Oberstleutnant (or Oberst) at the end of the war.

                    Kind regards, Peter

Yes, as would be EKII and the Winter Medal

If this was taken late in the war, the officer would be required to wear his decorations. Yes, as an Austrian or Czech/Moravian he may wanted to not be photographed with Nazi-era decorations on his wedding day, but why would he wear German uniform and not his WWI uniform or Austrian/Czech uniform for the event?

I agree, but he would be eligible for at least the clasp to his 1918 EKII - even if he just sat behind the desk all-war-long!

He is a catholic for sure... He wears the Austrian Marian Cross of the German Knight Order (Teutonic Order), which was a strict catholic order of chivalry...
I also agree that he may have not been ever promoted or could have been retired during WWII - but if this is 1944, then he was active pretty much up until the end!!

The photo could well have been taken in 1944....perhaps he just did not update his circa 1939 medal bar.

This General then had to know about each awarded KVK and also WHO had been awarded it...

I don't believe that a German officer on ACTIVE duty in WW II would wear a WWI (or Austrian) uniform for "official" wedding-photos.
Personnally I think this pic is from the time between 1938 - 1940, not later. He purchased a "German" bar but didn't get any other decorations at this time.

Maybe another one on this forum will find out who he is and we can get more informations! As I said before: a very nice pic!

                              Kind regards, Peter
