Recently Discovered Unpublished Wartime Reference Work + Order of the German Eagle

Gentlemen. I recently posted this thread on the "Crosses of The Wehrmacht Forum". Since I am still anxious to obtain further information from every section of the collecting community, I thought it might also be of interest to the "General Awards Forum". I would appreciate any information you are able to offer on this recently acquired grouping, brought home by a G.I. stationed in Berlin immediately after the war.

The collection revolves around a 1943 edition of “DIE AUSZEICHNUNGEN DES GROSSDEUTSCHEN REICHS”. The book contains numerous pencil amendments to the contents, including alteration of the date from January 1943 to December 1944 In addition, altered and updated text has been affixed to the book in the form of typed slips.

Of perhaps great importance are a number of type written sheets which may form the basis of a significant amendment to the volume, intended for the 1944 release which perhaps never took place. Those of you who are German readers may be able to throw considerable light on the grouping from these pages.

Accompanying the collection and apparently always with the grouping, are four awards. A Pilot’s Badge, an excellent Screw Back Spange, A Lifesaving Medal and a fine and cased Order of the German Eagle, 3rd. (?) class. It is interesting to note that neither the Spange nor the Order of The Eagle appear in the 1943 edition and one cannot help but wonder if the intention was to photograph these examples, perhaps for inclusion in the 1944 edition.

Numerous additional images can be examined here:

I look forward to reading your comments.

    Kind regards, Simon

Hello Ross. I’m trying to establish if the typed pages relate to any previously unknown awards or decorations. Links to websites are prohibited on the forum unless you are a sponsor but the link posted here gives all the images.

Unique information has surfaced as a result of the second posting. As follows
Klaus Patzwall published the 5th Edition of Doehle’s “Die Auszeichnungen des Grossdeutschen Reichs” in 2000 (German only, still available I believe). The papers here look like materials drawn on for that edition. This was originally intended to be published in 1945 but the print run was destroyed. A manuscript survived, which is what Patzwall drew on to produce his edition.
The page headed “Einleitung” and those numbered pages 2-5 are early drafts of the introduction and statutory provisions sections that appear in the Patzwall edition. There are two pages relating to the Deutsches Schutzwall Ehrenzeichen, describing its reintroduction in 1944 and the addition of a Spange for those who had already received the award. This information is also contained in the Patzwall edition.
There is a brief Foreword dated September 1944 that says all awards and regulations introduced (since the previous edition) have been taken into account. The text relating to the Golden Oakleaves obviously post-dates this. Neither of these is included by Patzwall.
Of the award figures for all earlier versions of the Iron Cross only those for WW1 are included in Patzwall’s edition. Doehle did not cover variants of awards so it is not surprising that the screwback EK Spange is not specifically included. The Rettungsmedaille am Band is included by Doehle and the non-portable award pictured here is referred to in the text but not pictured as the design is described as being the same as the award worn from the ribbon. The Adlerorden mit Schwertern is also covered but the grade included in this lot is not pictured. THANK YOU M.: Ross are you still " looking for paperwork ,awards ...Best prices etc" ???. Google translate would not have provided any of the above . I must state here that I am an interested party myself .This contribution clearly was worthy of additional exposure as shown by the resulting enlightenment it has achieved .
