    Interesting Ostmedal Packet

Probably not unique, but first one for me. Thought I'd share it here. Have a look at the grouping it came with in the documents section.

      Hello Hank,

Very nice issue envelope. I have never seen one like this before. Is the Russian Front Medal marked on the suspension ring?
      Best regards! Tom

Nope, not that I could find. It's a part of the large 263. INf Div grouping I posted in the Paper items section, so I'm comfortable with the provenance.

        thanks for the input Tom,

        Hank

            Hank,

This is a very nice packet ! It's in my own definition a variation #5 type 1. A first for me in the Ost guise !

These crimped cut packets are generaly associated with 'late' war packets '44-45' era.

I'm not certain of this theory for sure, (I have some conflicting dates so far and I'm trying to determine and average guesstimate !!) and would like to know the date on the citation if possible please, you can relate to a degree the age of packet/award inception to the citation VERY liberally.

We know its '42 onwards in any case roughly but a sample date to start with would help in the long term and perhaps I can find some correlation in the months to come in regards to dates.

            Very nice !

            Kind regards,

            Marcus

Will double check the date on the citation and post later today.

As always, many thanks for the info on this!

                  Hey Frank,

You beat me to it again, I forgot to mention this yesterday, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft..........Ziseleurinnung, Berlin is the maker # 23 on the packet.

                  (24 & 25 I recollect have a long winded designation too)

And if anyone wonders why I'm at home again this blessed country of mine is having a traditional summer........it's raining and I can't fly VFR today, even though I'm IR........bugger !

Hank this is a great packet, keep in touch I'd like to use this for a book project and article if I may please.

                  Kind regards,

                  Marcus

                    Marcus -
Went through the grouping to get you the info. It is as follows:

Obergefreiten Fritz Schneider earned the medal (per the 'standard' Verleihungsurkunde) on 25 November 1943. He was a member of 3 (mot) Pionier Battalion 263, Feldpost Nr. 00136.
On 19 Jan 1944, the Citation and Medal accompanying it was sent from the "genesenden Kompanie" (Pionier Ers. u. Ausb. Btl. 34) in Koblenz "einschreiben" to the family, which lived in Bernkastel on the Mosel.
As an aside, found some other goodies while going through the grouping tonight - 5 Feldpost postcards from a friend or brother in the SS, including one with an LAH/SS 2. Ersatz Kompanie stamp, dated 3 Feb 1940. Cant read it, unfortunately, it's in Sutterlin.
Enough for now - if you want or need better pix or more info, by all means shoot me a PM.

                    all the best,
                    Hank
