      Hi Shane,

They are of course faked, but I feel confident from the little I can see the box is genuine. Probably a Wacther & Lange Mittweida by the looks, they are often seen on the lid inner as the maker, the fake boxes don't carry this as a hint ! (until they read this)

As for the medal, for a 101% opinion better pic's would be needed. It looks okay.....but then I've known girls like that

Whats the price, it's a very very common medal originality yes is important, so is price when conducting a purchase on such a common award and more often than not boxed.

Still one of my favourites though, a good looking set all three.

        Hi Shane

Although impossible to make any type of opinion based upon the quality of these pictures, I would say the odds are in your favor that this is a real one. It is in the nicer type box, and appears to be maker marked.

Thanks for the Quick replies! It is from a very reputable dealer, but as we all know dealers are human too and can make mistakes. The price is $100 US for the box and medal. I felt that this was a bit on the pricy side, but the box is mint as is the medal. So.... ....I think I will go for it.

What do you guys think? $100 too much to pay for this medal in this condition? I have looked pretty hard for one in this condition and while I came accross many in my searches, they were not in "like mint condition"

ANy opinions on the price? I'll set up more pics of it soon.

          Thanks!

I'm probably not the best to comment on US prices but $75 would be more in the region in my opinion.

These can be found mint in there boxes very often as with the silver 25 yr as well.

Like I say I'm not the best to advise on prices, but $100 seems a alot for me ?

            Kind regards,

            Marcus

Two or three years ago, I would have scoffed at $100, but with the way prices have been rising lately, this civil stuff is really coming into its own.

The question you should be asking is "Is it worth $100 to you?"

You have done the searching and finally found one that meets your criteria as collectible, do you want to risk losing it in the off chance you might find one a little cheaper?

I think that this is probably priced fairly, based upon its condition and the type box it's in, since I have seen other 40 year examples in the plain box sell for $75, even a year or so ago.

                (hi marcus!)

..meanwhile, two collectors half a world away answer the same question at the same time...one having his morning coffee, the other pondering the thought of heading off to bed for the evening....

                  Hi Mark,

If only I could say great minds think alike, but I'd take your opinion and advice any day of the week my friend , a year ago I was pm'ing you every two minutes for help.

Take care and speak to you real soon,

Mark, Marcus, thank you so much. I have been looking casually for an award like this for some time now, and am at the point where $100 seems a little pricy (in that I feel $85-$90) is about right, but just as you said, is it worth it to let a nice example slip by for $10? I will be purchasing this one. I will post clearer pics once the medal comes in and I just want to thank you both for your contribution to this thread.

                    Kindest wishes and best regards,

                    -Shane

Shane: You started off by saying you are mainly interested in Iron Crosses, so it seems you have reached one of the innumerable crossroads we all come to in our collecting.

WHY do you want THIS cross?--

Are you branching out into other areas? (That is great, but the way prices are going, you may not have the LUXURY of being able to wander around out of FOCUS the way somebody my age did.)

Do you just like the LOOK of an award? (That is also great-- been there and still doing that! But-- what FOCUS would this help with? NOBODY mortal at this date can end up with a "One Of Everything" collection, and having a specific focus, or at least limiting what you try for will help the direction of your future collecting.)

Boxed awards are great. Is it the BOX that has struck your new interest? They don't "do" anything for me, personally, because something in a box means it was never WORN by a Real Person. For myself, after many years of trying the OOE path, I decided to go into medal bars---

because THIS guy did not put his potentially lone award (hence left IN that box) away in a cufflink box! Here is a BIOGRAPHY all mounted together AND it has an Iron Cross TOO.

                        Hey Rick,

I have a few 20 year service crosses, and have been looking at collecting in new areas lately (as my EK collection is as large as I would like it to be for the moment <-- That should last about a day )

And I figured I would try and collect the 3 piece set of the Long Service medals.

you are right the way things are going completing one of everything is a task left for Tom Hanks! I myself have a collecting bug to satisfy and I like to complete sets, so I am trying to focus on what I can afford.

Maybe one Day after I hit the Big Lotto I will be able to complete the Crosses of the Whermarcht collection with SIlver Gold and Gold with Diamonds DK series along with the RK series, but I highly doubt it. I think an RK will become a lifes achievement in collecting for me. As for the box... ...well I already have several 20 yr uncased examples and wanted to collect some mint ones.

As for the complete display ribbons, they are beautiful, but I have nowhere to display such bars... ...yet!

I am 24 and in a few years will be purchasing my second house, but until then my collection is in the living room, driving the wife mad!

Wouldn't it be nice to have one of everything? YES! But then the fun of purchasing new items would be lost.

                        Thanks for the reply!

                        -Shane
