What has always made this medal one of my favorites is that it was banned from being worn once Italy surrendered...

I too am unsure why Alligator/Crocodile represents Britain on this medal.. In fact it would be kind of a compliment to Britain.

In America when someone uses the phrase, "It would be like wrestling and alligator" it typically means something that you can't control, a worthy opponent and something you can't control and might very well likely lose.

I never gave much thought to the design of these medals. I only have one example in my collection currently, although I've had a few others over the years. I really like your comments and it's a brilliant analogy. I now want to go out and find more of these for my collection.
