SS-Long Service Medal for 8 years: 2nd type!

This medal was awarded mainly to SS NCOs and Officers from 1938, onwards. What's commonly seen is the 1st type which is a bronze medal and watered ribbon.
This 2nd model is slightly larger and heavier then the 1st Model of this medal.Another observation has been made that the details of the medal both front and reverse are higher relief i.e. the SS runes stand out more, than on the 1st model.
The measurements are as featured on this example pictured here:
    Width : 38.64mm
    Height (with suspension loop): 43.37mm
    Weight: 30.48 gramm.
The finish is more of a natural brass , I would appreciate any other pics of this medal from fellow colleagues.
    Servus,
    Josef

This is the reverse of the medal. I would appreciate any other info on this medal such as manufactures and up till which date they were awarded?
    Many thanks in advance,

      Seppl,
I have never seen a Second type SS DA for 8 years before, it doesn't look like the 1st type illustrated in the Text books. I must say it looks really high detail. Can anyone supply pictures of the 1st Type medal? Just, for comparision!

There is rael difference in the 1st and 2nd type Medals, I do prefer the look of the second type one, because the striking is sharper and more high relief.

            Hi Seppl,

I also never heard that "second type" story (neither read about it). What is the source of this?

            Cheers, Frank H.

Maybe it's just the photos, but did the second pattern not have the flared suspension ring like the first patern?

This medal has come from the most reputable dealer in Militaria in the World, Detlev Niemann. I think it may a varient maker, there must have been more than one manufacturer of SS Medals. Also, yes the loop is the typical "tear drop" shape. I have no doubts of this medal!
