Ohio Bars have a very cheap catch that you can easily bend with your finger.

Ask the seller if he can straighten the catch out you will have a fake for sure.

There is a good thread on spotting this some place

My first though on this was Ohio as well.

      Pierce,

I am on the fence about this one. It just looks to good to be true. Hopefully, when you get it in hand it is perfect.

I personally would pass on this one, looks too new. And I don´t think that the Ohio-man is the only person in the world who puts together ribbon bars.

Maybe this has a chance, it is hard to tell when it has been put together, but the ribbons looks brand new from a roll, and it is quite easy to buy these rolls from a show or from some of the dealers.

If it is cheap say like 10 € then buy it, because even if put together post war it is at least worth that sum. If it is expensive then I would back off.

        Just my two cents.....

I got this ribbon bar and all is looking good! It passes the black-light test and the clasp will not bend.

What is the verdict now? I am thinking of keeping it, but would like more opinions still if possible.

            Thanks

"Ohio Bars have a very cheap catch that you can easily bend with your finger."

IMO this is a misconception. I've a 3-piece Ohio-bar (all NSDAP LS's) with the typical "pointy" catch in brass, which will not bend by finger-pressure.

              cheers

The catch on this bar is just like a lot of my other Third Reich ribbon bars.

Pierre, just make sure the end of the catch hasn't been cut on both sides.

                  cheers

                      I think so too.

Looks like a classic southern Ostfront combination to me, with that Rumanian one on the end.

It's pretty rare to find these Silver (German) Ostvolks on a medal bar.

Most of the green/white ribbons seen turn out to be WW1 Saxon.

Unfortunately, this type of metal backing for ribbon bars (and the components for other styles) is widely available - I've seen packs of up to 100 in various sizes sold over the past couple of years.

Similarly, rolls of original ribbons for just about any 3rd Reich award are also available, as are swords devices, especially of this later type. In short, based on the materials, there's no way to tell a wartime ribbon bar of this style from one sewn up last week. Establishing whether the thread or backing material are synthetic might help provide more evidence for post-war, but UV light and comparing it with Ohio fakes does nothing to help in this respect as the ribbons and parts are authentic.

From what I've seen of ribbon bars that have been put together using original parts, the stitching and backing material on your example are the same as other made-up bars, including one I've seen with the same grouping of awards, minus the KVK and Westwall medal. There is nothing about it that would persuade me to accept it is original.

This is what is makking medal and ribbon bar collecting so hard...the fakers are just getting too good!!!

James, how can i check if thread and backing material is modern?

                            Thanks
