    Memelland Medal

Some of you might remember my threat of last month where I posted that I bought my first fake medal and it was the Memelland medal. It was a bit painful as they don't come cheap but these things happen and perhaps I should of been more carefull.

So here I am again and this time I am planning on buying one but asking for some advice first in stead of after. I don't think the medal is fake but just to be on the safe side I would like some advice.

It is on the E-Stand at the moment and the seller was so kidn to let me post it here before I buy it.

    The photo's:

    Thanks gents.

    Cheers,

I just purchased a memel(slanted G) after doing my homework on a couple of different forums. The second set of pictures(the close ups) to me the medal is a fake.

The first 2 pictures are a little small to offer an opinion.

    Check this out:

I see from estand that the 2 sets of pictures are of the same medal.

      I don't like the s's a's or 22 on the reverse.

The first 9 in 1939 doesn't appear to be totally closed.

There are a lot differing opinions on the memel.

If you want to get one that you can be fairly sure is original go
with the slanted G and not the upright G.

Just my opinion. I have been known to be wrong.

If you want to get one that you can be fairly sure you will be able to sell and get your money back, get the slanted G ..

I honestly don't think anybody really knows for sure which ones are authentic.

The ones with the slanted G are popular because one with that style of G is pictured in Dr. Heinrich Doehle's publication in 1943. "Badges-Decorations and Insignia of the Third Reich."

Allot of guess work involved with these little medals ..

        All the best ..

If you look at the sales catalogs of the different firms producing and distributing these medals, both types were pictured in these books. And these were definitely printed before 1945. The tilted "G" is not an indicator of originality. The above badge sold by Mathias looks absolutely original to me.

This one looks fine to me also. I would steer clear of the ones with a straight G if they also have slanted m....

The publication I mentioned in my previous post is readily accessible, due to Reddick's reprinting, making the slanted G so popular. Assuming the reprint is accurate. Where would one find these period sales catalogs? I would think they would be harder to find than the medal it's self. I have seen the cropped images supposedly from period sources on various threads on this forum. They are not an accurate reference unless you have the complete catalog in hand.

              All the best ..

                Thanks Guys.....

I hold the medal in my hand and I´m sure that´s a good one.

It´s a great L/11 medal and very rare. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

Sorry, I don't like this type of Memel...
The "G", the stems or oak branches between the band returns, und so weiter... That's the controversial one.
I'm not saying the medal is a fake, please! Just talking about this old polemic issue...

                          Hello Mathias,

Is that a trick question? It appears to me to be the same medal that is being discussed at the start of this thread. Therefore I'd expect the opinions to be the same.

Here is a Memel I revceived today.

                            Slanted G.
