LDO presentation boxes

G'day,

I need a bit of help, I'm purchasing a unmarked Gold Wound Badge ,however what worries me is that the badge comes in a presentation box marked with imprint of " LDO " .

My question is, was it common to present awards which had no Hallmark ito recipients in a LDO marked case?

I don't have any cased wound badges so I cannot relate directly to this example.
Where is the LDO , is it on the outside or inside?

I have seen many LDO marked cases (usually on the inside) which contained a badge or cross with no LDO mark. So I don't think it's unusual. The badge may not be original to the case anyway, but so long as both are original, so what?

I just hope it's not one of the coke bottle gold wound badges with the little blue LDO marked box!

ps I think for the gold badge, the case should be red/burgundy

Thanks for the reply it is much appreciated. The LDO mark is on the inside of the box. The case itself isn't in great condition ,colour, is burgundy. As soon as it arrives I'll take photos and post them here.

Hi Bill

I have an EK 1, that came to me, in a LDO box. The cross itself has a incuse relief, numeral 6, centered on the outside of the coke bottle pin.

As for the box:

• white satin lining on the lid and constituting the hinge as well
• no button to lock, vacuum seal
• black velvet on the award mount, which is slotted
• dark colored LDO mark(stamped or screened)on the inside of the lid, inside an oval, inside a rectangle

The glue that held the award mount to the bottom of the box has lost it's grip over time so that the mount will readily lift out. There are markings on the underside of the mount. These markings are in raised relief and are the numerals 2598 along side of D&B within an oval.

Bringing this thread back up as I've received my Gold Wound Badge and case as well as a cut out WW1 Black wound badge. Both are alright in my mine , however, I have a niggling doubt about the LDO marked case.

Comment appreciated, btw the colour on the Gold badge is 95% unfortunately my camera (canon powershot S10) didn't pick it up very well.

whoops.
Now, this badge is unmarked and has retained 95% of the finish. when looking at the pictures sent to me I thought the presentation box was lined with red/burgundy materail ,however, it is lined with black and white. Reading various publications they say that red/burgundy is usual for the Gold badge presentation box. So would black be unusual?

Maybe the case is OK but not a wound badge case? From memory, I can't remember seeing a wound badge case that had a push button opener, always vacuum sealed. The badge itself is not a early piece so I think the case would not be high quality.

Could you post some pics of the case? Does the lower section come out, if so how does it look in there?

ps... remember, this style of wound badge has been faked! Is that a vertical notch about the hinge? It that a bad sign? Could you take a close up of that area? Where are the wound badge boys???

I opened the bottom of the case ,the base is made out of cardboard with the fake leather border of about 10mm width around the base in the middle there is a strip offelt abiut 15mm wide running from the push buttom to the top of the case.

The insert is black felt which is moulded onto a piece of wood which is cut out to accept the hinge and catch.

There is a transparent substance which appears to be the adhesive.

I must admitt that it looks like a vertical notch above the hinge but when I look through the loupe there is no indentation.
