Question about sports badges

Hello, I would be grateful for any info:

what sorts of things did an individual have to do in order to earn a DRL sports badge?

there were 3 grades right?

also what was the DRL sports badge for invalids/disabled all about? They are very nice looking badges and I have my eyes on one at the moment.

It would be nice to know what they actually were all about. was this given to someone who was disabled in the war but still physically active? I dont really have a clue.

have had a look in the search facility but no joy

Hitler considered this the one award all German's should have. The DRL Sports Badge Replaced the DRA Sports Badge in 1937. The difference being the addition of a Swastika. The badge was awarded in (3) grades Bronze, Silver and Gold. To qualify for the Bronze grade a men or women had to be between the ages of 18 and 32. They also had to past all (5) parts of a rigorous physical test within a 12 month period to qualify for the Bronze Grade. The (5) physical tests were in Swimming, Jumping, Running, Weight Throwing and Speed. e.g. The Speed Test for men consisted of running 10,911 yards in 50 minutes, or swim 1,091 yards in 29 minutes or cycle 12.5 miles in 45 minutes. The requirements for women were less rigorous.

The second level of the DRL Sports Badges was the Silver Grade. To achieve this level the recipient had to be between the ages of 18 and 32. They have had to have tested and passed the criteria for the Bronze Grade and they have had to passed the same test for an additional 8 years ( they did not have to be consecutive ). Or they could be between 32 and 40 and passed the (5) part physical test within 12 months. Ref, Orders, Decorations, Medals and Badges of the Third Reich by Littlejohn and Dodkins.

The third level of the DRL Sports Badges was the Gold Grade. The badge in Gilt was awarded to recipients of the DRL Silver Grade and they were able to pass the (5) part physical test for an additional (7) consecutive years. Or the badge could be awarded for those who were past the age of 40 who passed the (5) part physical test within 12 months. As the War evolved and the number of "War Disabled" grew a special version of the DRL Badge was instituted on 18/11/1942 for the members of the armed forces who "in spite of considerable disability managed to attain the average level of proficiency in the performance or test / exercise for those with that type of disability." This badge is the same as the other DRL Badges except the DRL is in Silver and the Wreath and Swastika is in Gold.

That is not correct.

It changed 1934/1935 from DRA to DRL with swastika.

Silver Grade:

correct is: ... additional 7 years
