newbie, any help would be appreciated :)

hello, sorry I'm sure this is in the wrong forum but I'm BRAND new to all this...so I apologize up front for my ignorance...I'm trying!

anyway, a quick hello: I'm in the us military stationed in germany for 4 years (my second tour here ) and my wife and I recently became addicted to the local flea markets

I have become quite interested in german military "stuff" for lack of a better term. I found these two items and have tried searching but am coming up short...sorry if the photos are too big.

I'm not collecting to make a profit, just for personal collection. but it would, of course be nice to eventually learn how to identify most items I find, and be able to describe them a little bit to family and friends that view them.

that said, can anybody tell me anything about these? found them and couldn't pass them up. may be replicas, may be worth nothing....who knows. i just thought they looked pretty cool. hopefully sometime soon I can learn the trade a little better and be able to recognize what's what.....

thanks for any hints or info anyone can provide in advance....

    -andy

I believe your 2nd medal is for a religous congregation.

      Andy,
First, let me say welcome to the forum! Secondly, I have no idea what your two items are. However, I am sure someone will know and comment on them.

Welcome to the forum. The first item is a piece of patriotic jewellery from the first world war made from a piece of a driveband- nice but not rare. the 2nd is a religious medal.

Hello Andy and welcome to the forum! You will find this site addictive and very informative, there are members here who are the foremost authority on war items. I can say that the first piece you have there is definetely a WWI item, but I don't know what it's for or if it's original. You may want to post it in the Tinnies forum also as someone there may be able to help you. The second piece I have no idea.

                thanks for the welcomes
EDIT: TYPED THIS AT THE SAME TIME AS THE TWO REPLIES ABOVE.....THANKS!!!
hopefully someone can eventually give me some insight on either of them...i'm not expecting them to be anything too special...just a fun start to my new hobby but I'm definitely curious about them....

in addition to trying to find out about them, i have a question or two about collecting these types of items in general...

one mainly...again i'm very new to all this so forgive my ignorance here: but i was told that anything bearing a swastika or even possibly items related to the like, are illegal to possess, sell, buy trade etc here in germany....even for innocent purposes such as collecting, etc.

so what's the deal with that? i guess a more specific question is...am i likely to find anything like that at a flea market eventually? (we go every weekend...)....and if, by chance, i were to stumble across something like that...am i breaking the law by purchasing it? possessing it? you get what i mean.....

i just want to know the facts about it to go about this the "right" way...

any beginner's tips/hints would be great thanks again...

ps, last flea market we went to, (the one were i picked up the two items pic't above....) there was a large shoebox FILLED with a lot of incredible, old military german photos....i couldn't stop looking at them. but for some reason i walked on and didn't even make an offer for them. been kicking myself ever since...i don't know why i didn't pick them up hopefully he'll be at another flea market in the near future with the same box...won't let them get away again.

The Latin on the Medal reads

"May Virgin Mary with her Son Jesus bless us"

Most likely comes from group who had it struck for a a pilgramage to Lourds or alike.

                  Welcom by the way.

As for finding any hidden gem at a flea market in Germany -(or anywhere in the EU for that matter ) You will have much better luck in 'Hoboken NJ'

But you never know one member here pick up a rare ICII from a dealer at a good price.

Total bull****, collecting for historical purposes is perfectly legal in Germany.
                    Cheers, Frank
