    Sturmflut Medal ??

    Hi,

    First, there's no real place to post this - has anybody ever suggested a dedicated place for 57 re-issue awards (and in this case, early Bundeswehr)?

    OK, this little '57 grouping arrived recently (along with 2 x BW EM and a BW shooting lanyard). What was the 1962 (?Hessen?) Sturmflut medal actually awarded for? I'm guessing something to do with armed forces storm flood relief?

    Any additional info will be appreciated.

      Yours is the Niedersachsen (lower Saxony) 1962 flood medal. There were different medals in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein created.
      It was awarded for participation in the relief of that flood. It is not an award for special merits.
      This Catastroph relief medals became a nice tradition in Germany and are continued until today (Niedersachsen forest fire 1975, Sachsen forest fire 1992, Brandenburg flood medal 1997 and finally the flood medals for 2002)
