Question on Heer Long Service Award

    Hello All,

A recent uniform that I have picked up belonged to Karl Hansen. Here is his service record:

    CAREER
    PRE WWI & WWI
Entered Service in the Army as an Officer-Aspirant in the 32nd Infantry-Regiment (03/04/1897-1904).
Adjutant of the III. Battalion of the 32nd Infantry-Regiment (1904-01/08/1904).
    Company-Chief in the 32nd Infantry-Regiment (01/08/1914-09/11/1914).
    Wounded, in Hospital (09/11/1914-??/01/1915).
    Company-Leader in the 252nd Reserve-Infantry-Regiment (??/01/1915-??/02/1915).
Leader of the I. and II. Battalions of the 252nd Reserve-Infantry-Regiment (??/02/1915-01/05/1915).
Leader of the I. Battalion of the 252nd Infantry-Regiment (01/05/1915-??/01/1916).
Detached to the Officer-Training-Course in Neugut (??/01/1916-09/06/1916).
    Commander of the I. Battalion of the 252nd Infantry-Regiment (09/06/1916-~);
    At the same time, Regimental-Leader of the 245th & 253rd Reserve-Infantry-Regiments (??/09/1918-??/10/1918).

    INTER-WAR YEARS
Commander of the I. Battalion of the 252nd Infantry-Regiment (~-16/12/1918).
Commander of the IV. Battalion of the Regiment Stobbe (16/12/1918-01/08/1919).
    Company-Leader in the 8th Reichswehr-Infantry-Regiment (01/08/1919-01/10/1920).
    Company-Commander in the 12th Infantry-Regiment (01/10/1920-1923).
    With the Staff of Infantry-Leader I (1923-01/12/1925)
Commander of the II. Battalion of the 21st Infantry-Regiment (01/12/1925-01/04/1929).
Commandant of the Troop-Training-Grounds at Ohrdruf (01/04/1929-31/01/1931).
Retired with the Honourary rank of Generalmajor (31/01/1931).
Placed to the Command of the Army (26/08/1938-~).

    WWII
Placed to the Command of the Army (~-23/05/1940).
Commandant of the Troop-Training-Grounds at Beverloo (23/05/1940-24/04/1942).
    Führer-Reserve (24/04/1942-31/05/1942).
    Mobilisation Regulation Lifted (Retired) (31/05/1942).

As you can see, he retired in 1931 but was called back to service in 1938 to serve another 4 years.

My question is..... Which long service awards would he have qualified for (Silver, silver or Gold, silver... etc) AND would he have qualified for the 40 year Oak Leaf device.

(I'm trying to replicate his bar and just need to know which would be proper)..

ALSO... IF ANYONE CAN FIND A PICTURE OF HIM POST 1940 I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT (as I'm trying to place all of his loops on the tunic)...

In regards to the research for his picture... He was in command of the troop training grounds at Beverloo... Did the German's have 'yearbooks' perhaps that would show him ?????

    Cheers
    Mark

He would have recieved the Prussian XXV Years Long Service Cross in 1920. For career regulars, war and overseas service counted double, so 1914-18 ='d "10 years." (Awards were suspended for Prussia and the navy, which used the same awards, during the war.)

The "double time" never applied after 1920, so in the case of say a naval officer who might have joined as late as 1907, yet still got the "XXV" in 1920 for foreign peacetime cruises and the war, if brought back as an (E) retread in the mid-1930s, he would have switched to the Wehrmacht 25 and 12-- even though he did not have the REAL time in. He already "held" a "25," so was not downgraded.

Your man, of course, DID have real time in. He would have upgraded his old Imperial XXV to the Wehrmacht 25 and 12 worn together. He would not have had the 40 because he didn't get that far, and award processing ceased in 1939 (again, on outbreak of war), so Wehrmacht long service awards were "frozen" in 1940 as the last 1939 paperwork worked through. I have seen ONE 1941 "40," which (in the absence of paperwork) I assume was 'self-awarded." The General in question certainly wore his little oakleaves... but whether he was AUTHORIZED to, he took advantage of his lofty rank to wear what he felt he was entitled to. Hansen, with 1897-1931, had 34. Out until ?1938, and re-retired in 1942, that only added up to 38 years.
