      Hi Cliff,

The round pin is French for the central shipwreck rescue company. Not sure of the other.

      Best regards,

This is going to sound a little strange, but I recognize the symbol at the top of the badge that looks like a flaming cigar flanked by 2 wings and with lightning bolts shooting out in every direction. The French military uses this or a similar symbol to represent military telegraphers and dispatch riders and /or postal couriers. The French word for telegrapher is "Télégraphe" and dispatch rider is "Estafette" and you see both the letters "T" and "E" on the badge. So I wouldn't be surprised if this was some kind of organizational badge for veterans or even active members of these military-trades. In that case, the "M" could stand for "Militaire" and the "S" might stand for "Société".

It's reminiscent of a KM artillery trade patch but these are pretty generic among Navies around the World.

I agree with you on this flaming winged-cigar resembling the very reconizable naval artillery insignia but the ligtning bolts then become a puzzlement as well as the fact that there is no "A" for "Artillerie" on the badge. A further argument against it being "Artillery" is that the French did not appear to use this logo for their naval artillery units.

The 6 swords do, in fact, look like artillery short swords so that could be another clue in favor of this being a naval artillery organizational badge.

I managed to find an example of the symbol I was talking about in Post No.2. It's the French honor medal for telegraphers and dispatch couriers. Note the similarities.

The hexagonal badge is indeed French as well. I tried a reverse image search and found that it is the school badge of the Enseignement militaire supérieur scientifique et technique (EMSST) [Higher Scientific and Technical Military Education].

I read the description of the EMSST training curriculum and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why they designed this badge to include a flaming baton with wings, communications-style lightning bolts, and six daggers in the form a propeller. It's almost like they added random symbols that have practically nothing to do with their organization's programs. I just think the French like to confuse people.
