I believe I see dark red tabs on his collar which would make him flak. - Bill

Hi Bill and Ben,

Those collar tabs are most likely yellow. It was a property of many WWII B&W films to record yellows, reds, and oranges much darker than they appear to the human eye.

Hi Bill,

I have actually discussed this here several times in the past. At the risk of sounding kurt or trite, which I assure you I am not, the information comes from my head and experience. I have been a professional photographer (advertising and scientific) all my life. I used to shoot with these unusual B&W films in the 1970s. Interestingly, this same family of films, which record yellow darker, record blue much lighter. So a dark blue medical tab photographed with these films would appear very light, as you would "expect" a yellow tab to appear. You cannot judge correct color from a grey tone if you do not know the type of film used to record it. Most modern B&W films record color tones more accurately. Both were used during WWII, those that record yellow light, and those that record yellow dark.
