FJ camo for review : : need help !!!

    Hi,

    Good or fake ?

    Thanks for your answer.

    Best Regards

First quick impression says im not keen on the wear pattern, why paint a helmet with 3 missing bolts? Does appear to have two white coats? As for the liner and straps well i only have one para in my collection and have never taken time to get to know the ins and outs. Not much help im afraid

All components original while the white paint must be checked more close. But it looks promising..

Agreed. Winter camos are tough to photograph accurately. This one looks good!

                  Hi,

Agreed with the originality of the components. But about white paint in the bold holes ?????? Why not post war ?

Strange to see paint on the aluminium liner band. Has the inside rim been painted ?

There are a lot of strange parallel scratches/ line visible, especially in pic 2 and 11. Almost looks like it was painted a layer, worked on and then painted another layer? J

It could be period taken from another helmet which has been painted inside...Anyway best solution check similar helmets by hands..

This is not a reply with an opinion one way or the other on the authenticity of this paint scheme, however, I've always been curious about the practice of using what I would presume to be an oil-based paint, therefore rather permanent, for snow. I would have thought white wash would have been a far more practical and less permanent solution, able to be washed (or worn) off more easily and leaving either the issue paint (or the two or three color camouflage) underneath undisturbed and ready for action when the snows melted. Helmets painted with conventional white paint would have been required to be repainted as the snow melted. Maybe the German supply system was efficient enough that the necessary paint was readily on hand at Winter's end for the transformation from snow back to the appropriate color scheme. I've always wondered.

Oil based winter paint is ok for real winter helmets. There are plenty of them found on battlefields.
Even elite FJ units used this kind of paint..have several dug up from positions of I./Sturm , winter 42-43. Almost all helmets from that unit in oil based paint camo. Also this well visible on some period pix . I also wondered why they used so shiny kind of paint but perhaps it was better than nothing..
