    Stendal? Wittstock? Narvik barracks?

    Hello all,

I own a series of photographs of a FJ that joined the FJ early 1940 and served in Narvik. However, I still do not know where these photographs were taken. Are these the barracks of Stendal? His previous location Wittstock? Narvik? Or none of those. As you can see, there has been an explosion and they are repairing the roof.

There are more photographs that show a jump scene. As I am not sure if it is the same location, I have added one that clearly shows the barracks.

    Best regards,
    Paul

      Interesting pics.

      * I do not think this was the result of an explosion. For an explosion to remove that amount of roofing, it more than likely would have blown the windows out and caused other structural damage (walls, doors, etc.). I personally think this was storm damage.

      * In the picture showing the two guys on the grass talking it looks like the guy on the left is wearing a KM Bordmutze and the 3/4 length black leather protective coat. He could as well be OT, can't tell though due to his position in the pics.

      * If this was Norway I'd expect to see some evidence of snow around still, unless it was some months after the invasion, but then there's a problem because there's Fj parachuting in.

Perhaps some who are familiar with Stendal can pipe in.

      Good luck!

Thank you for your help. It indeed makes more sense that this sort of damage was caused by storm damage.

Just in case it might help, I have added a zoomed in version of the two men.

          You're welcome.

Can you tell what type of tunics the guys sitting on the roof are wearing. I tried expanding it and it looked like they had breast pockets which would cause me to think either Heer, or LW wearing Tuchrocks. Also, the footwear looks either like jump boots or mountain boots. Can you get any better detail on those with a magnifying glass.

If they are Gj then that would cause me to start thinking Norway as well.

Thanks again. The pictures are quite small, so it won't get much better than this.

In looking at it now I don't believe they're Gj as they are wearing overseas caps rather than Bergmutzen. Also, they look like the LW schiffchen rather than the Army M-34.

One thing is for sure - it must have been cold that day. Many of the guys have their hands in their pockets and sides of their caps pulled down over their ears.

Unfortunately there really isn't much to go on in the pics to determine the location

              Good luck

Your opinion is actually helpful. I am now almost sure that it is Stendal (or Wittstock). There are more pictures that probably show the same building from a different side, but I was really puzzled by the damage. It makes perfect sense that it is caused by a storm. Back in early 1940 you did not witness such damage that often, so it is understandable that they recorded it. How things changed over the next few years...
