    An other m38 from Crete

This helmet is from an old mans collection in Crete. I tried to obtain it but he didnt want to get rid of it However i share my dissapointment with you...
The story of this helmet is known to me and i give it to you as i was told.
It was morning of 20th of May. The merchant V.D is heading from his village in Mylopotamos to the town of Heraklion, in order to sell his Merchandise. At noon war broke out and the sky was full of parachutes. V.D didnt fight but hurried to get back to his hause. Following the road to Gazi area(west of Heraklion and 7/FJR2 drop zone) he spotted a dead paratrooper lying along with his rifle. He loaded the helmet and the rifle of the dead soldier on his donkey and headed back to home. Unfortunately the helmet later was used to plant duty . Before 5 years i saw it in a battle of Crete exhibition. I came in contact with the son of V.D but he didnt want to sell it. Now i dont know where it is.

Ps: Many civilians didnt fight but came from the villages just for plunder and in order to obtain a weapon.

We drove up to Kastelli while we were there last September, am I right in thinking the locals put up more of a fight there ?

        Cheers

yes mainly civilians fought against Murbes Platoon. Only 13 survived. It is said that after the battle the Germans found mutilated comrades on the battlefield
