    I too entertain the thought and with logical speculation in agreement that those nasty Americans (which could have been my Father) did indeed bust his chops. Likely for the common reason of this POW verbally asserting his ideoligical inferior stereotypical posture of Americans.

    Can clearly see his ass has been taught a lesson in reality if in that case. Who could really complain about America's treatment of prisoners in comparision. Overall, the USA provided the best welfare for POW's. I believe most were thankful for the opportunity to surrender to, or become captives by the US forces over other forces.

    Nice picture by the way, which I believe I may have seen before.

      I don't think this was the case at all. American soldiers were not getting into fist fights every time they captured someone. I agree that there have been published photos of Germans who have been knocked around by angry GI's after their capture but I don't feel this is the case with this particular soldier. The caption clearly states that he was part of night jump and by the looks of his swollen face I would say he either got smacked pretty hard by a tree branch as he was descending down or perhaps when he hit the ground he tumbled face first. Another possibility by the looks of the clear cut and the fact that his whole right side is swollen is that he got hit by a shell or grenade fragment. Which either way lead to him being captured. It's hard to put up a fight when you can barely see out of one eye.

        Well,it's really all just speculation isn't it?....I know I certainly don't believe everything that is written or that I read.


        It could certainly be from a punch or being hit with the butt end of a rifle.

            My previous post did not actually assume the POW was really beaten, but as Steve already said, the comment was in jest about leather zipper pulls. Steve and I have running dialog about this.

            The POW may have been beaten, many were, especially those wearing camo as this Fj is, but from the looks of his injury it could also be from a bad landing.

              We dont know what happened, he could have shot someones friend and got beaten for that instead of shot when he surrenderd
              It looks to me that he was punched, look at the nose and the cut bellow the eye, thats a "one looker" of a hard direct punch in the face.

              Who wouldnt do the same if you see your buddies beeing shot all day ?

                We are good! All in the same boat, I readilly admit that's the first assumption that crosses my mind.
                I did'nt want to get off of the base of the primary subject (zippers) but my assertion was intently a positive and slightly humoric manner not a harpooning. Otherwise i possess/ demonstrate emotional stability with a mature broad minded easy going attitude.

                On the contrary to support other theories; I have had several tree landings in my career, and chances are,,,your sh_t's going to get "F'd up!"

                Seen many cases worse off than this by just landing on a basic terra firma to the extent that invoved death. At least this trooper appears to be able to walk away. Thats the best parachute landing fall you can execute (the one you can walk away from)

                  That was my thinking and why I said he had a "bad night". These guys jumped at night into a pine forest. It is unlikely he started his mission with trousers in that condition.

                  While I proudly wore a US uniform for 13 years, I also have an objective thought process, and also spent alot of time with US and German WWII veterans. Few US combat veterans I met were too shy to talk about what happened to many German POWS who surrendered; either individually or in small numbers. All we have to do is read the memoirs of veterans as well. Anyhow.....

                    Besides the cuts/swelling on his face, he has a few fingers bandaged also. I guess he had his fingernails pulled too and maybe a little waterboarding to boot perhaps?? Ahh, the good ole dayz...

                        Here's another one to add to this thread. The caption reads as follows.

                        "American troops near Vechal, utilize every means of transportation to bring in captured German prisoners.
                        Here, three Nazis are brought in a jeep belonging to a combat camera unit covering the operations in Holland. 22 Sept. 1944"

                            This last photo has to have been taken in 1945. The bumper number of the jeep tells me that the troops are from the 8th Armored Division. And, according to their unit history (see link below), the 8th Armored Division didn't reach France until January 1945 and didn't see combat until February 1945 at the earliest. Therefore, it's possible that this is an Operation Varsity photo from March 1945. Elements of the 1st Fallschirm-Armee under Generaloberst Alfred Schlemm defended against the airborne assault and river crossing.

                              there is a series of pics taken in normandy of an fj in sumpf smock with a camo'd regular infantry helmet and a grenade launcher on his kar98k- i believe from the bundsarchive, also printed in the big schiffer book of fj photos (cant think of the title right now or turn on the lights to look for it.)

                                Great photos Remy! Late war photos of FJs in water pattern smocks are tough to find.
