Yes indeed. Unlike in the USAAF, NCOs in the Luftwaffe, and in the RAF, could be pilots.

A lot of the senior pilots were NCO's and winners of RK's. In the case of bombers the pilots used to be NCO's and the observer would be an officer and the aircraft commander. Jacques

Is that the origin of the green HBT luftwaffe tunics? Are they generally attributed to use by LWFD? Does anybody have photos of LWFD wearing them (or where can I find more info on this)? I'm interested in these tunics as well as LWFD so specifics on this would be greatly appreciated

No argument, would also depend on the type of plane. Jacques Ps, seems to be an officer candidate.

His Beobachter badge might be hard to see, but here's a NCO observer with quite some missions, he's from a bomber plane IMO.

You can leave the yellow color and make it a field soldier, even Stuka units had their fieldtroops by the end of the war.. with Erdkampf abzeichen, Schmeisser and potatoe mashers..

258 kills if my memory serves. 255 against the Russians.

Yes, the guy is Nowotny, famous fighterpilot.. it was just to illustrate the HBT jacket.

Sure we can encounter, as we see in Jos' photos, the fact that collar tabs were added to cotton tunics, tan tropical tunics and HBT tunics. Still the unique exception.

HBT tunics were not Luftwaffe Field Division tunics. They are drill tunics and went from tan to blue to green. Worn for training and in some warm weather climates.

Seeing a mint unissued HBT tunic all jacked up with awards and collar tabs means you are looking at a fantasy tunic.

If people didn't buy these fantasy tunics no one would be creating them.

I am always wondering how it is with the rare green cotton late -war luftwaffe tunics. M44? With the cotton similar to that of the tropical tunics.

Anybody ever seen pictures of this rare tunic being worn or even being worn by LW ground troops?

                            kind regards
                            Ruben

                              Hi Ruben,
By M44 I am referring to the wool tunics which can be encountered in Blaugrau or Feldgrau. I have yet to see a photo of one being worn.

The HG formations fought in East Prussia and all the way back to near Dresden at the end of the war. Since so few of those members made it to the west it is impossible to know what uniforms they were wearing.

There is much we do not know about later Luftwaffe uniforms.
