I am just thinking of my father, the TX 36th div and all my German vet friends spending Christmas facing each other in 1943. The lights were different then.
      Rest in Peace!

Some information that I have, commander of this tank was Oberwachtmeister Schumann, others rumors instead by Feldwebel Eugen Opel. From this Hotel, the Germans could control the entire area that went from Casilina to the train station...but you know this already: let the images speak.

Sorry tu burst into this thread but may I ask what day this happened at the Continental Hotel in Monte Cassino?

Please burst in! This is a superb thread, packed with valuable historical knowledge thanks to good Marco! Good to have it active again.

Could not begin to know what day that photo was taken, but would think someday in late March 1944.

So, someday recently or soon, it was/will be the 68th anniversary of that photo.

Very interesting thread and it's been a while since I was last at Cassino.
First time I went, I went off exploring Snakeshead and sort of forgot, in all of my excitement, about my girlfriend in the carpark. Only about five hours!

Anyway, the photo of a soldier, that features General Anders (post no 421), is he holding a Russian SVT-40?

What a wonderful thread! Timely too, as i and 2 friends who were in the NZ Army with me travel to Monte Cassino (via Gallipoli!) in 4 days time. I will try and find where many of these pictures were taken from.

                  Hello,

Nice thread. I am including two PK photographs from the same roll. Probably taken in this area.

                      Propaganda at Cassino

Posted this on a thread here: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=667451

Because of their significance felt these should be here also.

This leaflet was printed by a Luftwaffe Propaganda Company attached to the 1st Fj Division. The leaflets were fired from Fallschirmjäger front lines via rifle grenades over the New Zealand troop positions.

Clarification: The PK would not have been attached to the 1st Division, but a small unit from the Propaganda Company.

                        And from New Zealand
