    Leros

    Guys,

Unfortunately due to business commitments I was unable to visit Leros. A close asociate went in my place as official Historian with a detachment of Royal Irish Fusiliers.

An eldery American gent who has resided on the island from 1949 was the main guide, a very knowledgable and friendly man.

The Greeks had all the German graves dug up post war and returned back to Germany! No official German graves exist on the island. No monuments, no cross, nothing!

This elderly US expat. explained how the Fj were regarded as a very disciplined group by the local Greek populace. Similarly their fighting qualities were evident. The problem arose from the latter Italian and German garrison that bittered the Greek Nationals.

The German interception of allied communication was vital in the success.

A wreath was laid for all that died, irregardless of race, religion, nationality or whatever. To be precie 2 wreaths were brought but both now rest on the one monument.

    C'est la vie.

    Regards,

    Billy
